Israel’s military launched a large-scale bombing campaign across the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, breaking the ceasefire with Hamas that has been in place since late January. At least 404 people have been killed and 562 injured, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, making it one of the deadliest days of the 17-month war.

The strikes were carried out amid mounting domestic pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with mass protests planned over his governance. “I cannot believe the war is back,” Ahmed, a father of three in Gaza City, said by phone. “We don’t know where is safe.” The families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza said in a statement that “the Israeli government has chosen to give up on the hostages.”In a statement delivered in the evening, Netanyahu said that “from now on, Israel will act against Hamas with increasing intensity. Negotiations will take place only under fire. This is just the beginning.”

BODIES STACKED UP
Former hostages and the families of some still held in Gaza expressed outrage over the resumption of war.
Released hostage Yarden Bibas, whose wife and two young sons were slain in captivity, said on Facebook that Israel’s return to fighting brought him back to Gaza, where he feared for his life. “Military pressure endangers hostages, an agreement brings them back,” he said
In Gaza, witnesses told Reuters Israeli tanks shelled areas in Rafah in the south. Bewildered children sat next to bags of belongings, ready to flee.
In hospitals strained by 15 months of bombardment, piles of bodies in white plastic sheets smeared with blood were stacked up as casualties were brought in. The health ministry said many of the dead were children, and 562 people were wounded.
