The initiative, Alternative Responses to Reduce Instances of Violence and Escalation (ARRIVE), teams a plainclothes law enforcement officer with a certified mental health screener when a 911 call indicates a behavioral health crisis is happening.”
To the extent that this initiative involves a reallocation of resources towards non-lethal police responses to mental health crises, this represents what “defunding the police” meant before it was distorted by police unions and the right wing. And confused so-called progressives.
