“Add work requirements here, but take them away there, just to use the power of the state to promote the family?” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, an economist who served under President George W. Bush and now runs the American Action Forum, a conservative think tank. “A traditional conservative would say this is none of the government’s business.”
